Hydration for the Mind
With the summer upon us we receive many tips on how to hydrate your body and mind during the heat waves that seem to come and go.
- Drink plenty of water
- Stay in cool places
- Don’t forget your sunscreen
It is important to sweat when the weather is hot, it’s the body’s cooling mechanism. Take it easy on the jogging and strenuous exercise. Make sure you remain hydrated and balance your exposure to heat with staying in a cool shaded area.
Children and the elderly are most susceptible to hydration as they may not communicate they are not well and not show physical outward symptoms. It’s only a couple of months a year we go through this type of hot weather and we can manage it well with a few small changes.
During this time, it may be best to put off making critical decisions until your brain has had a chance to cool. People tend to be more irritable in the heat and may say or behave in ways not their typical self of calm and rational.
But how are you hydrating your mind? During high heat, it becomes harder for our brains to think or concentrate, especially if the temperature exceeds 75° Fahrenheit. Scientist have found that our cognitive abilities tend to rapidly decline when the temperature increases even by a few degrees.
Keep your brain decision ready with a few tips:
- A cold damp cloth on your neck or forehead will help ease the heat
- Take time to meditate in a cool room to help you regain your composure
- Rest by taking a 20-minute nap or lie down to calm
- Breathe slowly and stay calm.
These can help you regain your brain power for better decisions down the line.
Most of all have a fun and enjoyable summer
Lots of Blessings,
